The whole barrier, and anything close enough to help a child over it. On a newer lot, look hardest at what went in after handover: a deck beside the pool, planter boxes along the palings, a pergola post near the fence. Each one can be a foothold. The permit surveyor signed the barrier off when the pool went in, and the yard may well have changed since.
Charlemont has 1,065 private dwellings; separate houses make up almost all of them. So a pool here nearly always sits on its own house lot, and on a compact one the side or back boundary fence can double as one side of the barrier. That brings your neighbour's side into the test: a woodpile or a trellis over there counts against your barrier even though you didn't put it there.
Council adopted the Urban Growth Plan for the Armstrong Creek growth area in May 2008. Today it is part new-estate land and part farming and public land. Your barrier is checked against the standard recorded for it when the pool was registered with council (the one in force when it was built), not against how new the house looks.
Booking from Marshall or St Albans Park? It's the same $250 visit. Nearer Armstrong Creek? See that local guide for local detail. The Greater Geelong lodgement notes covers council's side of things. If you're comparing prices, see what the $250 includes.

Over time, yes. Charlemont has low-lying ground with inundation and floodway overlays on parts of the locality, and the geology maps put alluvium and sandy dune ground underneath. A post in soft soil can lean a little between wet and dry spells, and the gate hanging off it moves too, sometimes just enough that the latch stops catching. The planners expected the water, too: there is drainage land set aside at Sparrovale Farm.
The defect that turns up on our fail lists more than any other is a gate that no longer self-closes or self-latches. That's why we open it from several positions, let go, and watch whether it shuts and catches on its own every time. The fix is usually a hinge, closer or latch adjustment rather than a new fence, and our self-closing gate guide has a test you can try before we arrive.
Sometimes. Some Charlemont lots sit under a small number of heritage, landscape and vegetation overlays, and replacing fencing near one of them may need a planning permit. We haven't mapped those overlays street by street, so ask council about your lot before any work starts.
Our part is the written list of what failed and where. Whether the repair needs a permit is between you and council.
A worn closer or a dropped hinge is a hardware job, not new fencing, and the overlay question doesn't come up. Fix it, let us know, and the re-inspection costs nothing. About nine in ten barriers we inspect pass.
Ring 0402 860 499 or send an enquiry with the street address and how we get into the yard. Owners usually get in touch once council's reminder letter arrives. We slot bookings in by area as they come, not on fixed days, and most are inspected within the same week.
On the day, the pool barrier inspection in Charlemont covers the full barrier, gate and latch included. If it passes, the Form 23 for a Charlemont pool is issued on site, and that is your pool safety certificate. Lodging it is the owner's job: the City of Greater Geelong takes it online, and the four-year cycle runs from council lodgement. Registration and lodgement are set out step by step in our Greater Geelong guide.
It's best if you can be home. Charlemont had 79 unoccupied dwellings at the 2021 Census, so if the house is empty, an agent, tenant or neighbour can let us in; sort out who when you book.
We don't certify brand-new pools. That sign-off belongs to the permit surveyor, and our pool safety barrier inspections page explains where we come in. Every suburb we cover is on the areas we service page.
