BPC (formerly the VBA) registered pool safety inspector for Anglesea on the Great Ocean Road, with the Form 23 issued on site when the barrier passes, $250 flat.
Call now — or we'll call you back
After hours or can't talk right now? Leave your name and number and Ryan will call you back the same day where we can.
Yes, and it comes up often enough here that access is the first thing we ask about. The town had 3,004 private dwellings at the 2021 census, and more than half of Anglesea's dwellings were unoccupied on census night, so an empty house on the day is nothing unusual.
Give us the street address and tell us who is letting us in: you, a managing agent, a neighbour, or a code for a key safe. We need the whole pool area, side gates included. In town, nearly all occupied dwellings are separate houses, and on a separate house a back wall, door or window can form one side of the pool barrier. If yours does, we need a way inside as well.
Most jobs are done in the week you book, slotted into a run with other addresses in the area. Ryan's drive from our Clifton Springs base is about an hour, and the price doesn't move for it: $250, the same as all our pool safety inspections across Victoria. Selling soon? Our guide Pool Fence Compliance Victoria: Before You Sell or Swim covers what to sort before the listing goes up.
Owners in Bellbrae book the same way. We also handle pool inspections in Jan Juc. For council deadlines, the Surf Coast compliance guide is the place to look. Not sure the pool is on council's books? Read how pool registration works.
We also cover Winchelsea.
On the edge blocks the back fence often faces scrub rather than a neighbour, because bushland and park reserves surround the residential area. Great Otway National Park and Anglesea Heath adjoin the town. On the shire's planning maps, bushfire, vegetation and environmental overlays cover much of the locality. On blocks like these, the planting near the barrier gets as much attention as the gate.
The barrier standard on these blocks is the same one that applies across Victoria. What differs is the planting. Shrubs, garden beds, a stack of firewood or a low branch near the fence can give a small child a foothold, so we walk the first stretch of planting on both sides of the barrier. Growth that was clear at the last inspection has had four years to fill in.
Trimming back is usually the whole fix. If a defect means a new fence instead, check with the shire before anyone builds, because an overlay can bring a planning check with it. We write up the defect; the permit side is yours.
It can. On the shire's maps, parts of Anglesea sit under inundation and floodway overlays. Where the ground stays wet, a gate post can start to lean, and the gate ends up hanging just out of line with its latch.
Of everything we write up, the gate that has stopped shutting and latching on its own comes first, and the cause is usually a hinge, a closer or a latch that has drifted out of line. So we open the gate to several positions and let go each time, watching whether it swings shut and catches without help. If it doesn't, the report says whether the post, the hinge, the closer or the latch is to blame. About nine in ten barriers pass on the day.
Surf Coast Shire takes it, and sending it in is your job rather than ours. Once you have the certificate from us, lodge it through the shire's online form for existing pools.
Keep the shire's letter somewhere handy. Surf Coast writes to owners with the next due date, and the four-year cycle runs from council lodgement, not from the day we visit. Questions about the register itself go to the shire on 03 5261 0600.
Registration steps and council charges change from time to time, so we keep them on one page: Surf Coast council pool compliance. A brand-new pool is outside our work, because the permit surveyor signs that one off. For the other towns on our runs, see all service areas.
